The accreditation process

Main content start

Stanford is currently preparing for its re-accreditation review by WSCUC in the 2022-2023 academic year. The university is participating in the Thematic Pathway for Reaffirmation (TPR), a new process for review that allows institutions to focus on selected areas for investigation.

Our Themes

A major part of the review process are focused studies of two thematic areas.

  • Advancing Undergraduate Education examines recent reforms to the undergraduate curriculum.
  • Supporting our Community for Success looks at academic and professional support structures for all members of the university.

Compliance with the Standards

In addition to the thematic studies, the TPR involves an extensive collection and analysis of documentation to serve as an evidence-base of Stanford’s commitment to WSCUC’s four Core Standards. These are divided into 41 Criteria for Review that cover topics such as educational objectives, assessment of student learning and teaching, program evaluation, shared institutional policies, and governance and resources.

Key dates

  • Summer 2021: Initial document gathering and analysis. Work plans for new investigations.
  • 2021-2022 Academic Year: Major investigations and draft of the TPR report are completed.
  • December 16, 2022: Stanford’s final TPR report is due.
  • March 15-17, 2023: Accreditation Visit
  • June 2023: WSCUC decision on Stanford’s re-affirmation.

The accreditation team

Stanford's accreditation efforts are led by a steering committee that is supported by an advisory committee of faculty and staff from across the university. The steering committee is composed of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (who is the university’s Accreditation Liaison Officer to WSCUC), Vice Provosts and Associate Vice Provosts of Undergraduate and Graduate Education, and assessment and evaluation staff from IR&DS, VPUE and VPGE.
